FILMY GEET AUR MERE VICHAAR.......

I am sure many experts on hindi agree with me, that poetry for songs in hindi films have established themselves as a class apart. There are many types of poems in Hindi and Urdu like kavitha (all moods), shaayari, chutkule, dohe etc. Filmy poetry has always represented an intense combination of these, matching the situation (unless of course it is a song in a Himesh Reshammiya film, where a sad song is a type of disco and so is a happy one!!)

So, what's the difference between a filmy gaana and a poem? Let's dissect a song and find out! One of the most simple songs I have listened to is "Kya hua tera Vaada" from the 1977 Nasir Hussain movie "Hum kisise kum nahin". The music is by RDB and the lyrics by the evergreen Majrooh Sultanpuri.

The song goes like this -

Now, the words that have been highlighted in bold, are usually the ones that are repeated to give the songs a combination of weighted meaning and rhythmic sound. This, combined with the highly expressive actors and well instrumented music make it a successful film song. The most wonderful thing about this song is that it has been written as a one-sided conversation between the protagonist and his lady love. So the song does not carry itself oblivious to the situation or the on-screen singers, but proves to be a turning point to the whole movie! To portray emotions of a lifetime in a two-and-a-half hour movie is tough - but tougher is the inclusion of music and lyrics and still manage to carry on the logic of the movie (Many movies obviously don't!!). So the protagonist sings, the lady love reacts and the antagonist feels that an act of plunder, violent seizure, or abuse of emotions is being performed by the singer .... and, as the message rightly says in hindi films, the protagonist laughs last !!
