THE TRANSITION

This write-up is a resultant of a series of thoughts set off by something one of my friends said - that we have come a long way from a TVS Champ to a car. It was indeed a very smooth yet eventful transition from our first motored-two-wheeler to the four wheeler we drive now. There were many changes and each change triggered off a new era of life in a subtle way.

The first time I rode a scooter was in my intermediate or plus two, and I was 16 years old then. It was a pista greenPriya, manufactured by Maharashtra motors, and a variant of Bajaj's Super. It was my dad's scooter and the only way I could use it was to give my dad an excuse to not use my Gen-X Hero Ranger bicycle, or to smuggle it to my early morning tuitions. This went on for a year and my dad gave in to my enthusiasm, and let me use it officially in the second year. The decision was heaven for me, but it came with a glitch - petrol was rationed. So I couldn't technically bunk boring classes and take off with my friends to movies and other places - but I had my own ways! This one saw my first few accidents, and the road rage in me!!!!

The second vehicle I rode was a maroon Bajaj Classic SL - a superb variant of the ever popular Chetak, with smoother clutch, better brakes, better tyres and a very very silent engine. My dad had purchased this for himself as well, but I started using it full time for my undergrad college, when he decided that he's getting too old for two wheelers. Everything was fine with this vehicle except that the alignment of the handle and the seat gave me backaches - and I decided to quit riding a scooter then!

The third vehicle I rode was a Red Hero Honda Splendor, and this time it was for me and me only - dad went ahead and purchased a car. This bike took me through the last three years of college, and I have innumerable memories with it. It witnessed many events of my life like my project deadlines, my first love, my long trips etc. I took immaculate care of it, never dropped it, never had a scratch on it, got it serviced on time and looked after it well. I sold it after driving 30,000 kilometers.

What was noticeable in this transition was my driving style, it went from road-rage on the Priya to a very responsible, helmet-wearing, driving constantly on 55kmph driver. It somehow sounds similar to the life of a general adolescent, who goes from a relative rashness in behavior and decision-making in the teens to a much mature, calm personality in his adulthood.

Although the next part of my transition consists of me learning how to drive a car and driving my parents' cars and being the typical good son, taking over the driving and relieving them of strain of driving distances, I shall skip to my first car, which is a bigger landmark in my life.

I own a 1998 Acura 3.2 TL, and owning an Acura is no joke. Acura, is a luxury brand of Honda, and comes with a bunch of features and specs, which you can find in one of my posts. This car has seen me as a seasoned driver, with experience both in India as well as the US, with thousands of miles of driving experience. Although taken on EMI, owning your own car gives you the kicks that other vehicles could never give in my life.

I feel that this post cannot be ended, as transition never ends......and I shall write a sequel when I buy my next car!
